Ingredients

  • 2 cups whole milk
  • 8 oz good-quality dark chocolate, finely chopped
  • 2 teaspoons brown sugar (optional)
  • 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract

Instructions

  1. In a saucepan over medium-low heat, combine the milk, sugar (if using), and vanilla extract.
  2. Optional: If you'd like a richer texture, add one egg yolk and whisk constantly to prevent curdling.
  3. Heat the mixture gently, whisking occasionally, being careful not to let the milk burn or boil.
  4. Once the temperature reaches 140°F (60°C), remove the saucepan from the heat.
  5. Add the chopped dark chocolate to the hot milk. Whisk until the chocolate is fully melted and the mixture is smooth.
  6. Pour the hot chocolate into mugs and top with whipped cream, chocolate shavings, or marshmallows, as desired.

Notes

  • if using unsweetened (bakers or cooking chocolate) add 3 tbsp of sugar, more or less depending on liking
  • for a creamier texture add one egg yolk, whisk together with warm milk to create a custard
  • for a richer taste substitute 1/2 cup of milk for cream
